The outcry for a solid defence among Arsenal circles has been loud lately. With the team sitting in 6th place (far away from Champions League), 9 points behind Sp*rs, things are looking perilous for the Gunners. Conceding 3 goals against the likes of Swansea and 4 against Nottingham Forest make the demand for change understandable.
Last week, we were been linked with Manchester United and England star Phil Jones. This has led to many betting sites and bookmakers shortening the odds of the former Blackburn Rovers star leaving Manchester United in the summer, which to me is an indication he could be leaving Old Trafford in the summer. It is obvious Jose Mourinho doesn’t rate him hence he only plays him when others are suspended or injured hence it won’t surprise me if he opts for a change of scenery.
However, the main question is whether signing Phil Jones would be the solution to our defensive problems or just another name for the fans to throw abuse at next season. There is no doubting the fact that we need another centre-back, a solid one, whether Jones is good enough is where the question mark is.
This has been the club’s worst season under Arsène Wenger and a lot of questions are being asked. Why our defensive problems have not been addressed has been the main question on the lips of both pundits and Arsenal fans so far this season. After the arrival of expensive attackers up front (Aubameyang less than a month ago and Lacazette last summer), it is important to address the defensive issues in the summer transfer window. It is not a coincidence that we have the worst defensive record among the top seven in the league so far.
And if you ask me, an injury prone player like Phil Jones is not the ideal signing for us especially when you consider his recent performances for Manchester United and the fact that we have Mustafi who is arguably better than Jones. We should be aiming for someone better than Mustafi and Jones, in my opinion, is not the defender we should be aiming to sign.
We were linked with the signing of Manolas last summer and in the just closed January transfer window and I think we should revisit that in the summer. Manolas is a good defender and will be a solid partner for Koscielny next season, this is in anticipation of us switching back to a back four.
Another name I will like us to look at is Toby Alderweireld of Tottenham. They are very unlikely to want to sell him to us, but it is worth a try especially with recent rumours surrounding him. Tottenham is reportedly ready to sell him in the summer should he continue to reject their contractual offers.
Arsenal should manipulate him, get into the player’s head like Barca does, offer him a big money contract and bid an amount Tottenham will find difficult to refuse. The good thing about Alderweireld is that except maybe Chelsea, no other top six clubs in the Premier league will need him in the summer.
Chelsea will certainly need a centre back in the summer especially if they sell David Luiz but we have a chance if we really want him.
