Arsenal have now completed the signing of Henrikh Mkhitaryan, with Alexis Sanchez going the other way. The next stop for Arsenal is Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and he’s the one fans are getting excited about – even more so after Mkhitaryan asked him if he would be joining him in Arsenal’s PR announcement video on the club’s twitter account which has now been deleted.
The latest reports from the continent state that Aubameyang has agreed personal terms with Arsenal, and it’s simply a matter of a fee and Dortmund’s replacement holding the deal up. Ivan Gazidis, Sven Mislintat and Huss Fahmy have been in Dortmund since Sunday morning, and it looks like talks are progressing.
Dortmund’s head coach Peter Stöger said yesterday: “We would like the solution to be there tomorrow, whatever it looks like. I probably would speak from the souls of many people, cos everything that has been clarified and brings clarity, is good for everyone in their life & would also be good for us as a team”
This was followed up by Wenger saying Arsenal are not close to a deal, but how much does Wenger really know? These deals appear to have been done over his head, with Mislintat leading negotiations. The talk remains that Olivier Giroud could be used as a makeweight, and if that’s what Dortmund want, Arsenal must sanction this. They must get this transfer over the line before Wednesday’s game with Chelsea.
The signing of Mkhitaryan has eased concerns around the club, but Arsenal fans are still on edge. They’re excited about Aubameyang, but wary that Arsenal could mess this up at any minute, and it has happened before – many times before. Mkhitaryan is not a replacement for Sanchez, he is more of a replacement for Walcott – he won’t replace Sanchez’s goals.
Aubameyang is the man Arsenal fans are excited about. He’s a genuinely world class player, and his arrival would be a real show of ambition for the club. It would be great PR for the club, and it would go some way to eradicating the negativity caused over the last 18 months. Announcing this signing before the Chelsea game would give the whole team, and every fan, a massive lift. It would increase the belief within the team, and could see Arsenal guarantee a place in the league cup final.
The league cup must now be a priority for Arsenal, who are out of Premier League reckoning and the FA Cup, and any extra boost must be done. Although Aubameyang is ineligible to play for Arsenal in the Europa League, a competition he has thrived in, and his arrival could give Arsenal enough to push harder for a top four finish in the league especially as Liverpool lost yet again last night and look catchable.
Get it done Arsenal, get it done now!
