Riyad Mahrez was snapped leaving the Emirates following Arsenal’s 2-1 victory over London rivals Chelsea, but was the Algerian winger there checking out his new teammates? Arsenal’s admiration of Mahrez is well known, and the transfer would make sense, so could he be heading to North London before the window slams shut?
Arsenal have been strongly linked to Pierre Emerick Aubameyang, but it appears their penny pinching is angering Dortmund. Arsenal seem to be relying on the fact that Auba is pushing for the move, and is desperate to leave Dortmund now, rather than waiting until the summer. But, with Dortmund not letting up on their demands, could Arsenal be turning their attention to Mahrez?
The thought of Mahrez in an Arsenal shirt is extremely exciting, and it’s one that makes sense. It actually makes more sense than signing Aubameyang, who is an out and out striker, meaning Olivier Giroud would likely leave the club due to a struggle for game time. Mahrez on the other hand is more of a like for like for Sanchez, and the prospect of him, Ozil, Mkhitaryan and Lacazette would be a mouth-watering combination.
At the beginning of the window, it was reported that Leicester would accept an offer of around £50m for the former Premier League Player of the Year, and it’s likely that would still stand today. It’s also well known that Mahrez would jump at the chance to play for Arsenal, and if Arsenal were to make this move, he would make an instant impact.
Mahrez is more than proven in the Premier League, and this season he appears to have got himself back to the form he showed when Leicester lifted the league title less than two years ago. This form has seen his goal scoring return, his trickery re-emerge and his aesthetic style re-discovered at its effortless best. It’s this combination that would make him ideal for Arsenal.
Some would argue that his signing would make Arsenal overloaded with wide men / number 10s, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. Arsenal currently have Ozil at 10, Mkhitaryan on the left and Lacazette up front. Iwobi is currently occupying one of those wide positions, and it’s fair to say he hasn’t exactly impressed. Mahrez would bring balance to the team, rather than a selection headache, and fit seamlessly into Arsenal’s style.
Most Arsenal fans would rather see Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and with Lacazette failing to score on a regular basis, you can understand why. But, Arsenal need to look at the balance of the team, and Mahrez would provide this, and bring goals. He could be a great signing, and if Dortmund really are getting fed up, Arsenal must look at Mahrez.
