As summer approaches, the rumours concerning new additions coming to the Emirates continue to flood the net. According to Spanish outlet El Gol Digital ( also reported in English by The Express and other media outlets), Arsenal is looking to sign the highly-rated Atletico Madrid centre-back, José Gimenez.
It’s no secret that Arsenal is in desperate need of defensive reinforcements in the summer. The Gunners have been shambolic at the back, boasting the worst defensive record of any of the big six teams in the league.
In response, it’s reported that the Gunners have made a shortlist of potential centre-back signings. Stefan de Vrij and Kalidou Koulibaly are both on that list. However, El Gol Digital believes that Arsene Wenger has now firmly placed José Gimenez at the top of that list.
José Gimenez would be the perfect signing to help Arsene Wenger appease an irate Arsenal fanbase. The Frenchman’s reputation is on the line as he led his club to another embarrassing performance in a big game. The Gunners lost 3-0 on Sunday to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup Final. A match that wasn’t even close from start to finish, as Arsenal failed to muster any form of resistance to City’s irresistible tikki-takka football. All the Gunners showed was defensive naivety, a lack of desire and an inability to compete with the best. The signing of José Gimenez could help even the playing field between the Gunners and their ever-improving top 4 rivals.
Since moving to Spain from Uruguayan side Danubio, the 23-year-old has made 121 appearances for Atletico, with 106 of those being starts. Clearly, if a defensive mastermind like Diego Simeone trusts the youngster this much, Arsene Wenger is right to place such importance on the centre-back.
This season, José Gimenez has made 16 La Liga appearances, in those games, he’s averaged 1.6 interceptions, 1.4 tackles and 4.4 clearances per game. By his stats, it’s clear the 23-year-old excels in perceiving& intercepting passes and winning aerial duels.
If Arsenal were to sign Gimenez, it would spell the end for Shkodran Mustafi as a first-team regular. And rightfully so, the German has been sub-par in his time at Arsenal, costing his teammates on several occasions. The 23-year-old would also jump in front of Rob Holding & Calum Chambers in the pecking order. However, before we start placing the Uruguayan in our starting XIs, we must consider who will also be chasing his signature in the summer.
It’s believed that the centre-back has a £57.3million release in his contract and there are a plethora of clubs like; Liverpool, Manchester United, Juventus and Inter Milan willing to match it.If Arsenal want any chance of signing the in-demand defender, they must be proactive in activating his release clause at the start of the summer window.
